Expect traffic delays in North Walton

Northwest Florida Daily News

Motorists can expect delays when traveling through north Walton County this afternoon. The funeral service for Army Sgt. Tim “Timmy” Padgett, who was killed in Afghanistan, will start at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Circle Drive in DeFuniak Springs.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve, which is north of DeFuniak Springs.

‘The ultimate in recycling’: Earth-friendly burials

Fran Sullivan-Fahs has a worm composting bin where she recycles fruit peels and other kitchen scraps. She gives away worms as Christmas presents to other gardeners. So when she dies, Sullivan-Fahs says, she wants to be put in a plain wooden casket and buried without a vault to encourage decomposition. She also doesn’t want to be embalmed because it involves chemicals.

Green cemetery new option for burial

Glendale, Florida – As John Wilkerson walks across the land he grew up on, he still marvels at its beauty. “Oh it is beautiful… look around,” says John Wilkerson of the Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve.And on this hike, Wilkerson is looking for a resting place; not just any spot mind you, but his final resting place. Wilkerson says, “well eventually, somebody will dig a hole and put me in it.”

Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve: The Green Side of Life (and Elsewhere)

John Wilkerson is one of those fortunate people who gets to do what he loves, and call it his job. Wilkerson and his associate Barbara operate the Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve (GMNP), north of DeFuniak Springs. Wilkerson says he acquired the 350-acre property “the old fashioned way—I inherited it.”
