A FORMER Keswick farmer has seen off objections from local churches and looks to be on the threshold of winning planning approval for a green burial site.
Richard Allen wants a burial site at Goosewell Farm on the eastern outskirts of the town and next week Lake District National Park planners will recommend that he gets the go-ahead.
The parishes of Threlkeld and St John’s in the Vale opposed his scheme on the grounds that there is no local need for additional burial space.
But Mr Allen has the support of Allerdale Council’s Bereavement Services department which says there is a need for such projects. People living in the area may have no links with local churches and do not want to be buried in a council-managed cemetery, they say.
A report due to go before the NPA’s development control committee next Tuesday says Mr Allen has gone to great lengths to ensure the impact of the development is minimised. The proposal would cater for anyone who wanted to be buried in the national park, as well as locals.
